What is MTC NILS?

The MTC NILS (No Interest Loans Scheme) provides families and individuals on low incomes with the opportunity to apply for a loan to purchase energy/water efficient whitegoods and essential household items, without the burden of interest charges or fees. MTC is the auspice for MTC NILS. We are a public benevolent institution and a registered charity.

What can I get a loan for?

In most circumstances we lend up to $1200. Loans are available for energy/water efficient whitegoods and essential household items such as fridges, washing machines and dryers, air conditioners, heaters, baby furniture and car seats, bedroom furniture, hot water heaters, computers, ovens, lounge and dining sets and televisions. In some instances loans can be used to cover car expenses, study and medical costs and employment related expenses.

Loans are not approved for:

  • Cash advances
  • Debt repayment and consolidation
  • Bond and rent money
  • Rent arrears
  • Living expenses such as food, clothing etc
  • Gas, electricity or telephone bills
  • Cheques payable to the loan recipient
  • Cheques to a third party for a private sale

Who is eligible?

Loans are for low-income earners. If you have a Pension or Health Care Card (HCC) and your household income is within our guidelines, you are a low income earner. You must also meet the below criteria:

  • Live within our NILS region (please contact us to discuss this criteria).
  • Have the ability to repay the loan (usually between $20 - $30 per fortnight).
  • Lived at your current address for three months or more.

Repayments

Repayments are tailored to suit individual circumstances. The term of the loan is usually around 12 to 18 months.

Most usually repayments are made through Centrelink’s Centrepay system.

How do I apply?

Call MTC NILS on (02) 9558 3444. We will tell you what you need to do to apply for a loan. We will also invite you to an interview. If you are eligible for a loan, your application will be sent to the MTC NILS Loans Assessment Committee.
